Exciting news out of Addy, Washington, the first net zero building using the 2×8 EcoSmart™ Stud has officially broken ground! The builder plans on framing in the next 3-4 weeks and the 2×8’s are at the shop waiting to be turned into EcoSmart™ Studs.
A Closer Look at This Net Zero Build
Once the framing is complete and the home is dried in; meaning the roof, windows, and exterior walls are all enclosed, we will be arranging tours for the home. Stay tuned for more information on when those tours will be and how to attend one. These tours will offer a chance to see the energy efficient wall assembly up close and learn more about our EcoSmart™ Studs.
This home is using 3″ of spray foam back filled with a blown in cellulose insulation. The racking design value of the exterior wall exceeds the seismic building code requirements of the area and the u/r factor wall design far exceeds the 2021 Energy code which Washington state is using. The 2021 Energy Code requires an effective R20 for wall insulation. The 2×8 ESS wall system comes in at an effective R-28.5. That is 42% better than required by the 2021 Energy code and about 115% better than 2×6 walls filled with R-20 batt insulation. As you can see, this net zero home insulation creates a high-performance wall system that significantly exceeds code requirements.
What Does Net Zero Energy Mean?
Net zero energy means that a building produces as much energy as it consumes over the course of a year. This is typically achieved through a combination of energy efficiency upgrades (like advanced insulation and airtight construction) and on-site renewable energy systems, such as solar panels. A net zero building balances energy in and out, significantly reducing carbon emissions and utility costs for homeowners.
What Is Net Zero Concept?
The net zero concept is based on creating buildings that use minimal energy and offset their energy use with renewable sources. The goal is to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and create healthier, more sustainable living environments.
