It’s foggy at altitude on the build site, but the excitement is rising as framing is now complete! Our Washington State net zero home is steadily progressing toward its goal: becoming a zero energy house designed for sustainability, efficiency, and long-term savings. The weather-resistant barrier (WRB) to be finished shortly, shingles going on and windows to be installed in the next weeks depending on the weather. We will have updates in the next weeks, but due to it being winter some of this will depend on snow in the area, which can affect our construction timelines. Nonetheless, we’re aiming to announce the net zero home tour dates soon—before insulation goes in. It’s the perfect opportunity to get a behind-the-walls look at how a high-performance net zero energy home is built from the ground up.

What is Net Zero Energy?
Net zero energy means that a building produces as much energy as it consumes over the course of a year. That means all the power used for heating, cooling, lights, and appliances is balanced out by energy the home produces. This balance results in a dramatically reduced carbon footprint and often lowers the energy bills.
Why Net Zero Homes Matter:
You can save money on electricity
You’re using clean energy
Your home is better for the environment
Net zero homes are often equipped with energy-efficient systems, advanced insulation, airtight construction, and solar or geothermal systems to help reach their zero energy goals—using as little energy as possible.
What Are Net Zero Homes?
Net zero homes are homes that are so efficient they can offset their energy use with renewable energy. These homes follow design and construction principles that focus on reducing waste, maximizing energy efficiency, and using sustainable materials.
